Today, we have a standard line of threaded fittings that we refer to as “Welding Flanges.” Other people may call them by other names such as: bungs, metal pressings, and shield bosses, just to name a few. Essentially, these welding flanges are very similar in function to a half coupling but dimensionally they have a lower profile and pilot into the tank through a punched hole. They have excellent welding compatibility because they are manufactured from slit coil raw material, which is the same material as the tank skin.
